The Investigation of Orphanage Students' Self-Esteem Levels

Abstract

In this research, the levels of self-esteem of 132 13-18 year old students attending the Lycée (high school) and middle school levels of orphanage in Malatya were investigated. While the self-esteem levels of students who stayed in orphanage were measured by means of “The Inventory of Self-Esteem”; general information about the subjects of the study was gathered by using a “Personal Information Form”. The “t-test” and the “one-way variance analysis" techniques were used to analyze the data. The research findings can be summarized as follows; where friendship, future expectations and perceived academic achievements were found to be effective on their self-esteem levels; the age of admission to the orphanage, length of residence in the orphanage, frequency of seeing their parents and perceived attitude of the personnel in the orphanage were found not to be effective on their self-esteem levels. The findings obtained from the study were discussed in comparison to the findings in the literature, and some suggestions were made.
