Abstract
This study is concerned with the description of the content of Turkish language and literature textbooks. In the period of transition to the pluralistic party system, in education too there was a move from using one standard textbook to alternative textbooks system. In this period varied themes by well-known writers were incorporated into the textbooks. In 1974, the single textbook policy was again adopted, however, it soon became clear that this was a problematic approach, so the alternative textbook policy was resumed. In the 1980’s texts on Atatürk and Kemalism appeared in textbooks. In 1991, a credit-based system was introduced and the alternative textbook policy was kept as such. Textbooks written in this period mostly included texts on the ethics of Islam, heroism and nationalism.
