Motives of ungraduate students to study at higher education institutions and their socialization tactics

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the motives of undergraduate students to study at institutions of higher education and their socialization tactics, and to determine the relationship between these two variables. In addition, this study aims at examining whether these variables differ in terms of students’ gender and grade level. In this study, Faculty of Education at Mersin University has been specified as a case and the sample of this study consisted of 1617 undergraduate students. ‘Motives to Study’ and ‘Socialization Tactics’ scales were used to collect the data from the sample. The collected data were analyzed through correlation, t-test and ANOVA statistical methods. The results of the analysis provided evidence that there were significant correlations between the motives of undergraduate students to study in higher education and their socialization tactics. The results also showed that there were significant differences among the students’ motives to study and their socialization tactics in terms of gender and grade level.
