Erasmus Exchange Students’ Comparative Views on Classroom Management in Turkey and in Their Country (Anadolu University Case)

Abstract

In this study, it’s aimed to determine Erasmus exchange students’ comparative views on classroom management in Turkish Higher Education and in their country and qualitative research method was used. The data was collected from 55 Erasmus exchange students attending different departments of Anadolu University during the fall and spring semester of 2008 and 2009 through the questionnaire with semi-structured interviews. Participants were selected with criteria sampling which is the method of purposeful sampling. The data was analyzed through descriptive method. Findings of the study indicated that the concerning instructional practices in their own university and in Anadolu University they perceived evaluation system, physical condition and classroom size as much more advantageous than that of their own university. Findings of the study also revealed that about dimension of classroom management they viewed student staff communication as much more informal than that of their universities. Besides, that the systems providing discipline in the classrooms of their own universities and in Anadolu University had unique features and that students in their own universities had more sense of responsibility for having self motivation than Turkish students were some of the views found out in this study. Forfurther studies it’s suggested to design a quantitative research with Erasmus exchange students at national and international level.
