Abstract

In this study, the questions that exist in the textbooks of the Turkish lessons used in the primary education, compiled under the supervision of the Ministry of National Education have been investigated. The questions are investigated in respect of their cognitive level, whether or not they are convenient for the intended class and age level, and whether they were written by taking into consideration the rules for question writing. A total of 371 texts and 1953 questions were investigated during this study. At the end of investigation, it was observed that in all of the textbooks used in the Turkish lessons for all of the classes, the average percentages of questions at the remembering (knowledge), comprehension, and application levels were 77, 21 and 2, respectively; and there were many questions at the analysis level and upper levels. Additionally, it was also observed that both the selected texts and the questions based on them were not prepared by taking into consideration class and age levels and their respective development characteristics. Besides, preparation of the questions so as to measure the same behaviour indicates that only some of the rules for writing questions were observed. These books are now being replaced under the supervision of the Ministry of National Education, and it is expected that observing the rules indicated in this paper will result in preparation of better quality books.
